A Little History of Dunham Forest Golf Club
Visiting Dunham Forest Golf & Country Club today it is difficult to believe that as recently as 1960 this splendid course was little more than a collection of huts and a concrete parade ground. The original 90 acres had been used by the US army and as an Italian prisoner of war camp. The land needed to be reclaimed. Leslie Glass (the first Club President) obtained agreement from the land’s owner, Lord Stamford to develop a Golf Course.
Initially, a nine-hole course was constructed which was officially opened on 11th June 1961. New members will find it hard to imagine those early days when the President – Leslie Glass, Captain – Harry Doniger and their enthusiastic Committee played the first rounds.
The atmosphere of those days is well expressed by Alex Hay, the first Professional; “What I remember most was that every day was exciting. So much was being achieved, progress was being made, traditions being set and Membership was binding together, but most of all there was a great sense of fun, and laughter was commonplace”.
Originally a derelict house called “Tirbracken” was purchased with the intention of refurbishing it as a Clubhouse. In the event the renovation costs were so high that it was decided to demolish the building. The present Clubhouse designed by John Day was built on the same site and was opened in September 1963.
In 1965 an extra 6 holes were constructed. Alex Hay left and the Club Captain, Archie Preston enticed Ryder Cup player, Dave Thomas to Dunham as Professional. Dave, who had come second in the Open Championship in 1958 & 1966 was made an honorary member. The course became 18 holes after Bernard Terry negotiated with Lord Stamford for extra land.
In 1983 Doug Smith, who became professional in 1972, left and Ian Wrigley was head professional until 2015, following which Paul Dennis became our head professional.
The Professional Staff are always ready to help with advice, lessons (video-assisted) and maintain a well-stocked shop. With its state-of-the art Golf Academy, superbly manicured course and stunning clubhouse Dunham Forest has grown to be one of the most respected Clubs in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire area.
